The 5th Annual Symposium of the Association for Environmental Archaeology was held at the University of Sheffield in September 1983. The conference was attended by well over 100 people. It had the inter-related themes of research design, research methods and interpretation. The topics discussed focused on two subjects which we have termed "Palaeoenvironmental Investigations" and "Palaeobiological Investigations". These form the titles of the two symposia volumes S(i) and S(ii) which record the proceedings of this conference.This volume is the first of the two.
