Khalaj (Xalaj), a Turkic language spoken in central Persia, constitutes an independent branch of the Turkic group of languages. It cannot be included, for example, among the southwestern Turkic languages (the Oghuz group: Turkish, Azerbaijani, and Turkman) nor among any other Turkic group.
